To automatically strip the whitespace at the end of each line, set the Strip Trailing Whitespace setting on the Editor page of the Preferences dialog.

To delete a rectangular block of text, use Edit > Selection Mode > Block to enter block selection mode, select the rectangle and then use the delete or backspace key to delete it.
